Sampling stages explained: proto, fit, pre-production and TOP
Apparel sampling usually moves through a prototype, one or more fit samples, a pre-production sample and a top-of-production sample, each checking something different.
What each sample does
Prototype: does the idea work. Fit sample: does it fit the block and size spec. Pre-production sample: does it match the approved materials and construction. Top-of-production sample: does the first finished goods match the approval.
Names vary by company, so agree on the stages and sign-off in writing.
Reducing physical rounds
MYTH creates digital samples and product visuals before anything is cut, so many design decisions are made before the first physical prototype. Company figures from MYTH put one sample at around 7 days and 6 to 10 samples before one design is approved.
