GSM, weave and blends: fabric spec sheet basics
GSM is fabric weight in grams per square metre. A spec sheet should also name the composition, weave or knit, width, finish and any performance requirements.
The core terms
GSM: weight per square metre. Composition: fibre percentages, for example cotton and polyester. Weave or knit: how the yarn is constructed. Width: usable fabric width. Finish: treatments applied after weaving or knitting.
Why it matters
Two fabrics with the same name can feel and perform differently. A precise spec gets you accurate quotes and fewer surprises. Add it to the BOM in your tech pack.
FAQ
What is a good GSM?
It depends on the garment. Compare against a reference fabric you like.
Why list the width?
It affects how much fabric a garment uses, and so cost.
